12 DESIGN PRINCIPLES

12 DESIGN PRINCIPLES that will guide DeCiTeL's work in shaping innovative training for Citizenship Education (CE) across Europe:

1) Redefining CE – considering CE as a dynamic, global, and inclusive concept.

2) Modularity and attention to national contexts – a training combining the core principles and methodologies of citizenship education with country-specific elements.

3) Stimulating demand and design according to needs – designed to meet teachers’ real and evolving needs.

4) Advocating & implementing the value of CE as a field of creativity and expression – making CE a field for innovation and representation.

5) Whole School Approach – engaging the entire school community.

6) Open to non-formal education and new safe places – linking schools with community spaces.

7) Value-driven education – anchored in democratic and humanistic principles.

8) Participatory learning processes at the center – learning by debating, mediating, and co-creating.

9) Peer learning as a key approach for CE – sharing experience and practice among teachers.

10) Innovative approaches to the assessment of CE learning outcomes – exploring new ways to recognize civic competences.

11) Joint design, joint development, virtual exchange, joint recognition – co-created modules by all school actors and cross-border validation.

12) Keep the project open to research developments and aware of/relevant to policy developments – informed by evidence and relevant for decision-makers.

With these principles, DeCiTeL steps up to shape the future of Citizenship Education.
